TikTok Offers Users Authority to Decrease AI-Generated Videos in Timelines

TikTok is introducing a updated setting that permits them to cut down on the volume of artificial intelligence-produced media appearing in their timelines. This move comes as the service disclosed that it currently hosts over 1 bn AI-generated clips.

Trial and Implementation

The update is in a pilot phase over the next few weeks before a full-scale release. This advancement comes amid a surge in content created by AI, fueled by new content generation software.

The Broader AI Trend

Recent reports that nearly a tenth of the quickest rising content creators on a competing service exclusively feature clips produced artificially. A large amount of this material is classified as low-quality AI content, a phrase for substandard, factory-style content that is often nonsensical or bizarre.

Our research shows that many people like content created using AI tools, ranging from computer-generated images to informative clips, and we intend to offer the community the power to see more or less of that, based on their own likes,” stated a platform representative.

Volume and Proportions

The service disclosed that there are presently over a billion videos on its app tagged as AI-generated. Overall, over 100 mn pieces of content are added to the platform daily, making AI content a relatively small part of its overall inventory.

Customizing Your Feed

Members will be in a position to reduce or increase the amount of AI content they view by using the topic control setting in the app and picking the AI content topic. Other topics that currently be adjusted under the filter encompass current affairs, style, aesthetics, and dance.

AI Disclosure Rules

Its policies oblige content makers to tag “realistic” AI-made content, and it forbids malicious fake videos of celebrities or crisis events. Any authentic-looking AI-generated clip that is without a tag can be removed under its terms of service.

Furthermore, the app will henceforth add an artificially created watermark to content produced via its built-in AI features, or flagged by an industry-wide initiative for identifying content made by AI. This step is designed to stop users from seeking to circumvent the labeling process.

Educational Initiatives

TikTok is also launching a $2m educational fund for professionals and organizations to create learning resources about using AI responsibly. This initiative will support non-profit groups specializing in training computer science.

Moderation Strategy

The video-sharing app has defended its content review process, during debate over plans to cut jobs for a large number of content moderators in the UK. TikTok is planning to reduce 439 jobs in its trust and safety team in its British office, with worker representatives and digital protection specialists voicing alarm that people are being substituted by AI moderation.

A company official clarified that people-led review would still have a role, but artificial intelligence can protect employees by removing the most graphic content before it has to be seen by staff. The company reported a notable drop in shocking and graphic content handled by content reviewers over the last 12 months due to intervention by its automated systems.

We believe it is crucial to balance people and machines to ensure user safety,” the executive stated. “We’ll have staff as integral to the approach, but we also think it’s extremely critical to minimize viewing of harmful content as quickly as possible, which is the area in which a lot of the machine support is making a difference work at speed.”
