A two-month voyage circling Australia is being halted days after the tragic passing of an older female passenger who was abandoned by the vessel on a distant island.

The passenger had been trekking on the remote island with other travelers from the Coral Adventurer, but broke off from the excursion for a rest. The vessel departed without her and returned later that day after the ship staff became aware the woman was missing.

An extensive hunt found her remains the subsequent day.

Officials are looking into the incident, alongside police and the official investigator.

Head of the cruise operator announced that guests and staff on the ship were informed that the remainder of the voyage had been cancelled due to the "sad loss and earlier technical problems".

Via official communication, he further stated that passengers would be provided a full refund, and said the company was working "to organize the homeward trips of the individuals via private aircraft".

Authorities also released an revised statement, and said they had "provided a directive to the Master" prohibiting any further travelers from entering the ship.

The representative said that they would inspect the vessel in Cairns upon its arrival.
